Town of East Fremantle has provided in-principle support for a permanent perimeter fence at the East Fremantle Community Park, subject to strict conditions.
Mayor Tony Natale said while Council had this week supported a decision to allow permanent fencing at the precinct, installation would not progress unless the conditions were met.
“We want to make sure any changes to the park continue to reflect the needs and expectations of our community,” he said.
“These include some important safeguards around preserving community access, identifying who will pay for it, and confirmed compliance with WAFL requirements.”
Conditions include:
- Written assurance from WA Football that a low picket‑style fence (of approximately 1.1m) meets venue requirements for all relevant fixtures – including finals – and that no additional height or further fencing will be required.
- Confirmation of funding to construct the fence, noting the Town will not contribute to the capital cost.
- A formal variation to the licence between the Town and the East Fremantle Football Club (the Club).
- Final alignment, materials and openings/gates will require Town approval, in consultation with the park’s operator Belgravia Leisure, to minimise visual impact and maximise community access outside match days.
The decision follows community consultation by the Town after the Club requested a permanent perimeter fence to meet a requirement by WA Football (that perimeter control was mandatory for all sanctioned WAFL Men’s and WAFL Women’s fixtures at the venue).
Mayor Natale acknowledged that the community had shared a range of views.
“We understand that this is an important issue for many people,” he said. “This decision balances principle and pragmatism, with Council carefully considering the park’s open and welcoming design, alongside the need to respond to requirements set by an external sporting body.
“We will continue working with the Club and WA Football to understand whether the conditions can be met, and what this might look like for the community.”
The Town will share an update in due course.
